OCSC: Why do you sail?

LS: Sailing is therapy. I love the feel, the scent, the sound, the sun, the water, the art and science of sailing. It keeps your mind on the moment. It's very much a Zen experience!

OCSC: What do you enjoy about working at OCSC?

LS: The comraderie of the staff. Our shared passion for the sport of sailing. And the magnificent opportunity to sail in such a lovely and exhilirating part of the planet.

OCSC: What's your sailing background?

LS: A native San Franciscan, I began sailing as a teenager on the Bay. After law school, I lived in Washington D.C. and sailed the Potomac and Chesapeake Bay for relaxation. Soon, however, my interest in sailing deepened and I began teaching sailing on the Potomac River and regularly deliver boats between New England and the Caribbean. In 2000, I returned to the Bay Area and joined the team at OCSC. Since coming to OCSC, I have earned my USCG master's license and have delivered yachts up and down the West Coast from Los Angeles to Seattle.

OCSC: When you're not sailing, what can we find you doing?

LS: Practicing law; playing my guitar or piano; reading a good book with a cappuccino at Berkeley's Cafe Trieste; seeing an occasional Giants or A's game; rooting for the Cal Bears; baking bread, cycling the Berkeley hills; seeing a show at the ACT; swimming at the Y; hearing great Jazz at Yoshi's; perfecting the omelette.

OCSC: What are your top five sailing books of all time?

LS: Sail Trim, by Stephen Colgate. Sailing Alone around the World, by Joshua Slocum. Two Years before the Mast, by Richard Henry Dana. Annapolis Book of Seamanship, by John Rousmaniere. Sensible Cruising: The Thoreau Approach, by Don Casey, Lew Hackle. The Odyssey, by Homer.
